Locke- "Mind and Body I"

When I decided to work on the mind/body problem I wanted to first start off with the brain and the way it thinks. First, thinking occurs when the "mind turns its view inwards upon itself, and contemplates its own actions." The mind then thinks of different solutions, and then comes up with an idea by putting these solutions together. My favorite part Book II, Chapter XIX was how Locke describes how the mind works while it is dreaming. The definition of dreaming to Locke is, "having the ideas in the mind not suggested by any external objects." Alot of ideas are stimulated by your surroundings (external objects), which is why we use our senses to remember. Locke used an interesting example. He described a huge thunderstorm and how someone who is awake is feeling these senses. They see the lightning, hear the thunder and rain, and feel the house shaking. For someone who is sleeping, they still hear and feel, but they are in a incoherent state of thinking because they are dreaming.

The thought of dreaming amazes me. Like Locke has said, someone who is awake and aware can feel these things through their senses. But havent you ever had a dream where you woke up and could have swore it was real? I know I have and man was it weird...I actually woke up scared and crying as I had left off in the dream...it was like that experience really happened to me and it was real and my emotions were real.. So how can you sense such intense things while you are dreaming if you are in a some-what unconsciouss state? How does your body know to get scared, and produce tears if these thoughts going through your head dont really exist?..I don't know...dreaming is really something..

That's crazy, that thunderstorm example. But yeah, dreams are crazy and the fact that there are things going on outside of you (while you are sleeping) and unless you wake up, you never know it happened. Haha, like when people play practical jokes on people and draw on them when they are sleeping and they wake up and is like how did this happen!?!?
